Ellen Goethel is a marine biologist who visits the first grade thanks to the  Creative Arts & Sciences Committee.

She shows the students live animals from the sea. Ms. Goethel carefully defines the scientific terms she uses to explain the animals. The animals differ at each presentation, depending on what the commercial fishermen net the night before. She has three stations, two with animal artifacts such as shark jaw and teeth, whale vertebra, starfish, shells etc. and one water table with live specimens. After her explanations, the students are free to have a hands-on experience at each table. Ms. Goethel emphasizes that the live animals are borrowed from the sea and that in the evening she will return them to their habitat.
