January 8, 2013

Dear Cabot Community,

Last week, I wrote to you to inform you that we were working on an alternate plan to address our enrollment challenge at the middle school level, specifically the projected over-crowding at Bigelow.  We developed this plan based on feedback we received from the Cabot community at two meetings in December.

This morning, Assistant Superintendents Cindy Bergan and Joe Russo presented the recommendation at Cabot that I will be making to the School Committee.  (I was not present this morning because of a bad case of the flu.)  The proposal states that beginning in the 2013-14 school year, all Cabot entering 6th graders will be permanently assigned to Day Middle School.  Our staff has carefully reviewed the enrollment projections and is confident that the soon to be completed expansion at Day will provide enough space for all Cabot students moving forward.

I am pleased to tell you we received very positive feedback from parents who attended the meeting this morning.  While there were some questions, there seems to be a genuine support of the notion of keeping the Cabot community together for middle school.

Please note that there will be an option for Cabot families to apply for Out of Assigned District to Bigelow.  These applications can be completed between March 1, 2013 and May 1, 2013.  The placements will be made on a space availability basis.

This recommendation will be formally presented to the School Committee at its meeting on Monday, January 14th, and it is our expectation that it will be voted on January 28th.  We promise to keep you informed as we proceed.  Thank you very much for your consideration and support.

Sincerely,

David Fleishman
Superintendent of Schools
