Dear Cabot Community,

In January, we informed you of our decision to unite all Cabot students at Day Middle School, conditional upon the passage of the Operating Override.  As you know, the Override passed, enabling us to add teachers at Day to support the additional students.  Of course, we are also very happy that the Cabot School will now be replaced or renovated.

The permanent change in districting for Cabot students will begin in September, 2013.  This plan will help avoid overcrowding at Bigelow Middle School and will take full advantage of the additional classrooms being built at Day.  It also addresses the community desire to secure one middle school location for the students from the Cabot School.

I do recognize that this change in assignment can be a challenge for some families.  During this time of transition, we will do everything possible to ensure that the fifth grade students and families receive the necessary information and support.  We are also aware that there are families that may want to apply to Bigelow under our Out-of-Assigned District Policy.  While we understand that some families may wish to apply, space at Bigelow will be very tight next year.

Assistant Superintendent Cindy Bergan and I have valued working with the Cabot community in coming up with a resolution that hopefully meets the needs of Cabot students and families.  Thank you very much for your understanding and support.

Sincerely,

David Fleishman
Superintendent of Schools
