Dear Cabot Families,

A belated Happy New Year to all!! To those I have not seen or chatted with since our reentry, I do hope your December break was filled with good times! Upon their return to school, your children were very excited to share their favorite memories of events that occurred during the break. It is fun for us to listen to their stories as we learn so much about what is so important to them.
Winter Recesses:
Brrr!! Earlier, this month we experienced some very cold days. We would like you to know that we make every effort to bring children outdoors as there is nothing better than a run outside in the fresh air. However, in Newton, when the temperature and/or the wind chill takes a dip to 20 degrees or lower – children stay indoors for recess. Earlier in the year, teachers engaged their students in a conversation to identify an array of indoor recess activities, games, as well as behavioral expectations for indoor recess. Now, indoor recess is almost as much fun as being out side.

Progress Reports – Posted February 6 on Skyward:
Across Newton, K-5 families receive feedback on their children’s progress in two formal ways. First, there are two parent-teacher conference periods: in October and March. During the conference, teachers share assessment information and work samples that are evidence of a student’s functioning and progress while developing goals for the upcoming months. Second, parents receive online progress reports twice per year: mid-year and in June. Your child’s progress report will be available on Monday, February 6 on line, through Skyward, for your review.

MCAS: Plan Ahead
The Department of Education requires schools to complete MCAS testing within a specified time frame in April and May (see below).

Please do not schedule any appointments or vacation days during the testing period. Although make-up days are available, it is better for your child to take the test with his/her classmates. If your child is sick and not able to perform at his/her best, he/she should stay home. Children cannot leave during the day for any appointments. Once the test begins, that section cannot be continued on another day.

Arriving at School on Time!!
Please help your child start the day on a positive note by ensuring they are at school by 8:25, at the latest. We have noticed an increase in Tardy arrivals (8:30 on) which means students miss the opportunity to be settled in the classroom when instruction begins at 8:30.

Learning Abounds
We look forward to the weeks to come. This time of the year is very exciting, as we see children make such strides in learning growth. We hope you notice and enjoy these accomplishments with us!

My very best,
Eva Thompson
