Safe Routes to School

Are you having a hard time fitting in drop off time before catching the commuter rail or making that morning meeting at work? Would you be interested in a walking school bus, where children from your neighborhood can all walk together to school?  To start a walking school bus, ask questions, or volunteer to work on safe routes, please contact us.

In addition, a co-chair is needed for the Safe Routes to School committee.  This position would be ideal for someone that regularly walks to school and has ideas about how to make our walking events more fun and meaningful for the students.

Playground Committee

The Playground Committee is beginning the process to add some new equipment to the playground, mostly for younger children (K, 1). The committee will be formulating a budget after consulting with the PTO, Ms. DiBella, CASP and Newton Parks and Recreation. The committee will include kindergarten and 1st grade teachers, parents, Ms. DiBella, and a CASP representative.  If you are interested in getting involved please email cabotpto.volunteers@gmail.com.

Understanding Our Differences (UOD)

UOD is a unique disability awareness program implemented in the Newton Elementary Schools for all 3rd, 4th & 5th graders.  Through UOD, students receive a seven part curriculum featuring information, interactive learning activities & inspirational guest speakers. Topics include (but are not limited to) Deafness & Hard of Hearing, Learning Disabilities, and Chronic Medical Conditions.  UOD is in need of:

  • Volunteers: Volunteers help with one or more unit presentations by leading small group activities with the students.  Total time commitment: 1 hour of training & 2 hours of helping in the classroom: 3 hours total per unit.  You can help with as many unit presentations as you would like to.  Dates for 5th grade are Nov. 15, Jan. 17, and Mar. 7.  4th grade programs will be held Jan. 24 and Mar. 21, and 3rd grade programs are Jan. 31 and May 3.
  • 3rd & 5th Grade Coordinators:  These individuals help with the logistics of running the unit in the schools.  This includes contacting teachers in advance, attending a training on the unit & coordinating the volunteers.  Total time commitment: Approximately 8-10 hours per unit.
